The Legacy Scholarship

Successful applicants for this award program can receive anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000 toward the cost of their education.

If the student has a relative who works in the field, they can receive up to $2,000.

Wisconsin Society for Clinical Laboratory Science

Many states have associations and non-profits that are designed to help clinical laboratory technicians attend school.

In the state of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Society for Clinical Laboratory Science accepts scholarship applications on a yearly basis.

Students should be graduating high school and plan on attending a clinical laboratory science program. Successful applicants will be given $500 for each semester of school. In the last year of their studies, students can receive an extra $1,000 scholarship.

Health Careers Opportunity Program

The Health Careers Opportunity Grant program is operated by the United States Department of health and Human Services. With the shortage of health care professionals, the United States government has tried creating grants and incentives for more students to get involved in the field.

Federal “Needs-Based” Grants

Students who need funding for school should always submit in their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before doing anything else.

Submitting this form will enroll you to receive funds from the main federal and state grants, should you be eligible to receive them.

Needs based grants are awarded according to financial status. In other words, the less income you have (or your parents, should this be applicable) , the more likely you will obtain a grant. Grant eligibility is largely determined by the income disclosure element of the FAFSA.

This information is used to calculate your “Expected Family Contribution” (EFC). The lower your EFC is, the easier it will be to get need-based funding for an education.

The two main forms of federal aid are the Pell Grant and the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant. Both of these aid packages are given to financially needy students who are studying any academic programs.

To be eligible for these grants, students must have a low EFC and be a United States resident.

They cannot have any charges for drug possession and must file with the Selective Service if eligible. Students must also be attending their school at least part-time to qualify for any aid. Although these grant programs are not specifically designed for dental assistance programs, they are available to students of any academic program.

Filing for the FAFSA is also important because it determines your eligibility for need based grants in your state. Some dental assistance grants and scholarships will also require you to submit your EFC so they can determine your financial need.

Health Care Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP)

This program is operated by the United States Department of Health and Human Services. It is intended to help economically disadvantaged students pursue a degree in the health care fields. It can also be used by students who are pursuing a graduate or professional degree.

American Dental Association

The ADA gives scholarships for students studying to be a dental assistant. These awards are given out every year to students who apply to the various scholarship programs located at their website:

Although eligibility requirements vary, the ADA has a variety of scholarships intended for minority students. Students should expect to meet various need-based or academic merit requirements.

American Dental Assistants Association (ADAA)

Scholarships offered by the ADAA are intended entirely for dental assistants. One such award is the ADAA Student Achievement award. Students who apply for this award must be members of the ADAA and be in the process of studying at a school for dental assistants. The application is due before March 31 every year and the award is for the amount of $250.

A second award offered by this organization is the Juliette A. Southard/Oral-B Scholarship program.

National Dental Association Foundation (NDAF)

Started in 1990, the NDAF created this award program to help students that come from a minority background.

Known as the Colgate-Palmolive Scholarship, this funding program has an application available here. This award is given to one dental assistant student each year for the amount of $250. If dentistry students choose to pursue further studies, they can receive higher award amounts for graduate work, dental hygiene programs and doctoral programs.

There are also five $2,000 scholarships given out to freshman students for every year they are in school.

To be eligible, students should demonstrate academic merit and financial need. They should submit their FAFSA in a timely manner prior to turning in their scholarship application. Staff members at the National Dental Association Foundation are not eligible for any award programs.

Job Corps

Run by the U.S. Department of Labor, Job Corps is a “career technical training and education program for students ages 16 through 24.” Developed for financially disadvantaged individuals, Job Corps trains you for your career, provides you with housing and meals, and even a monthly allowance.

Always inquire about grants and scholarships directly at the admissions office of the schools which you are investigating. The people here are the best suited to inform you of what’s available. And, more often than not, you’ll find that the school will have its own funding options for which you can apply.

If you are looking for paramedic/EMT grants and scholarships, then you should always visit your school’s financial aid department before you do anything else. The financial aid department is designed to help students find monetary resources to pay for their education.

To get started hunting down funding, all students should complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

This application is the “gateway” to the main federal and state grants.

The income disclosure information provided on this application is used to determine each student’s Expected Family Contribution (EFC), which is a measure of how much the student and/or his or her parents can afford to contribute to the education costs.

National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians

The NAEMT is a national organization designed to help professionals in the field.

Active members of the NAEMT can complete scholarship applications each year to receive educational funding. Individuals who are enrolled in EMT-B training can receive up to $500 while individuals in an EMT-Paramedic course can receive $5,000 in scholarship aid.

Once first responders receive these certifications, they can also apply for an additional $2,000 toward continuing their education.

To apply for the scholarship, students should turn in their application by the deadline.

They should also write a 1,000 word essay detailing their reasons for pursing the grant money and how it can change their life. Once all of the applications have been turned in, the student that exhibits the most potential will receive the scholarship award.

Carlos Lillo Memorial Paramedic Scholarship

Carlos Lillo was a paramedic who lost his life during the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center.

In his memory, this scholarship is handed out to students who are pursuing an education as an emergency medical technician. Applicants must send in their resume, an application and a scholarship essay.

They should also submit evidence of their financial need.

FARE Children’s Scholarship Fund

Started by the Foundation for Air-Medical Research and Education, this scholarship program gives out two awards each year.

Applicants should be in their last year of high school and plan on pursuing a career as a paramedic.

Successful applicants will generally show a strong academic history, community involvement, volunteer work and financial need. In addition, students should be legal residents of the United States.

Winners of the FARE scholarship will receive $2,500 toward the cost of their education.

Bound Tree Legacy Scholarship

This program is given to the children of EMTs, firefighters or paramedics. Students should be planning on attending an EMS or paramedic program.

Depending on their academic program, award winners can receive anywhere from $500 to $2,500 toward the cost of their schooling.

So far, the Bound Tree Legacy Scholarship has been given to more than 400 award recipients around the nation.

American Medical Response Reimbursement

Students who are already working in the field can normally check to see if their employer offers some kind of tuition reimbursement. Individuals who are employed at American Medical response can get the cost of their schooling reimbursed.

To be eligible, employees have to work for the minimum number of months before applying for the tuition reimbursement.

The state of West Virginia offers a loan repayment program for obstetricians or gynecologists who qualify.

In order to be eligible for the program, professionals must agree to practice in areas within the state that have dire need for their skills for a period of up to two years.

Recipients can receive up to $40,000 within two years to repay debts. These debts must be for schooling; the qualified public or private educational training undergone in order to obtain their degree.

Grants and Scholarships for Obstetricians & Gynecologists: Medical Student Scholarship Program

Similarly the state of Illinois has a Medical Student Scholarship Program designed to entice gynecologists to practice in the state’s underserved areas.

The Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions shows its support of the furtherance of students taking up courses in the allied health fields, including biomedical technician degrees. For a candidate to be considered he must be enrolled in an accredited college or university.

He or she must have had at least a single term as a student in said institution. Most importantly, s/he must be enrolled in a degree program (associate’s, bachelor’s master’s or doctorate’s) which is related to healthcare.

Economic standing is not a factor in the selection process.

The successful applicant will be chosen based on his or her academic achievements, community involvement, extra-curricular activities and strong communication skills. Once chosen he or she will receive a scholarship worth $1,000.

Allied Healthcare Scholarship

Recipients of this scholarship may receive up to $4,000. He or she will be required to render 100 volunteer hours or one year of service at a qualified healthcare facility in California. A candidate must have been accepted or is enrolled in an allied healthcare program. He or she must not have any other obligation to render voluntary service. Another important consideration is that he or she must be living in or is able to work in the state of California.

Health Occupation Students of America Scholarship

This scholarship is worth $500.

Applicants must be enrolled in a health science education program (secondary, postsecondary or college/university program).

They must present proof of outstanding academic performance. They must also submit proof of notable leadership activities and community involvement. Applicants are required to write an essay of 350-750 words outlining why they think they deserve the scholarship.

In the essay, they must also point out how they can be of good use in the field.

 Tylenol Future Care Scholarship

Special recognition is given to healthcare students by the makers of Tylenol, the popular painkiller. Students who show excellent academic performance and significant community involvement are awarded the Tylenol Future Care Scholarship. Federal and State Grants

The federal government offers several need based grants (i.e., grants distributed on the basis of financial need); these are grants which you should apply, regardless of your financial status. Applying is free, and the worst that can happen is that you are turned down for funding.

There are, after all, varying degrees of financial need and these grants are quite lucrative.

The Pell grant for instance, pays between $500-$5,500 per year, depending on the  information provided in the income disclosure element of the grant application.

While these grants are not specifically for Biomedical Technicians, the funding from them can be applied to most accredited programs!

There may also be state grants available, but this will depend on your state and its ability to sustain the cost of such programs. The good news is that if you submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (or FAFSA), you will be considered for any applicable state and federal grants which use this form as the basis to grant funding.

Most of the time, that is the majority of them.

Eligibility for Grants and Scholarships

Who is eligible for grants and scholarships? That’s million dollar question.

The basic principle here is that anyone who can demonstrate “financial need” is eligible for a grant.

However, what financial need actually means differs somewhat from grant to grant. In general it is based on the yearly income either of the individual seeking to enroll in the school program, or the individual’s family income (i.e. parents).

As we go over the various grant programs currently available, we’ll also take a look at what some of the eligibility requirements. Chances are that unless you or your family are really doing quite well financially (which is less and less common in these troubled economic times), you are eligible for some sort of grant.

Which ones you are eligible for will depend on the specifics of your personal financial situation as well as the school(s) to which you are applying.

If you or your parents are doing well and you’re not eligible for “needs based” school grants, you still have loans and scholarships available to you.

How Does One Apply for School Grants?

The simplest way to apply for a large majority of available state and federal grants is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.

It can also be picked up in paper form at many different locations such as universities, libraries, legal offices, and so on. The FAFSA is the basic way that state and federal government find out about and processes your financial status so that they can determine your eligibility for grants.

The FAFSA has several sections. In the first section you fill out basic information such as your name and social security number, address, and so on.

The next section requires you to answer questions regarding your dependency status (the majority of people applying for school grants are young and still dependent on their parents).

The third section requires you to answer questions about the income situation of the parents, and the fourth section asks for information on the income/tax status of the student himself or herself.

Obviously, for people no longer dependent on parents, the third section is not important, and the fourth section is where all the relevant financial information is supplied. Various documents such as your tax returns and proof of income are needed to complete the FAFSA (there is a worksheet that goes along with the form to help you gather all the right documents before hand).

Types of Grants Available

There are a number of school grant programs available in the U.S. Two of the main federal grant programs are PELL grants and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) grants.

In addition there are other grant sources which include state grants available in the student’s state of residence, scholarships given by private foundations and organizations, and grants given by the educational institutions themselves.

Pell Grants

Pell grants are one of the most common and widely accessed type of federal school grant, and are funded by the U.S. department of education.

This grant was originally called the Basic Education Opportunity Grant program and was named after Claiborne Pell, a US senator from Rhode Island. While the amount of Pell grant money issued has been steadily rising (in 2010-11 the maximum grant will be $5,550, up from $4,050 in 2006-7), the fact that tuition are also steadily rising means that it now covers less of the tuition than it used to.

It currently covers about 30% of tuition on average while in 1990 it was around 60%.

The eligibility for Pell grant is based on what is called Expected Family Contribution, which is an assessment of how much either the student or more commonly the student’s family can contribute to education costs for the school year being applied for.

Again, this information is accessed from the FAFSA – simply filling out the form and stating that you want to be considered for a Pell grant is all that is required to apply for one.

Some of the nice things about Pell grants is that the amount of grant money never runs out – the more students apply the more money is allocated, you can be reimbursed for tuition money you’ve already paid, and you can adjust the amount you are applying for in response to changes in financial status.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity (FSEOG) Grants

FSEOG grants are similar to Pell grants in that they are federal and are based on financial need. These grants are applied for in tandem with the school for which you are applying.

The government puts up 75% of the grant amount awarded and the school provides the remaining 25%. The eligibility is also arrived at from information on the FAFSA form and again, this is the main way to apply for them.

A few other stipulations for eligibility are that you must be a U.S. citizen, you must not already have a Bachelor’s degree, you can’t have had an overpayment of a federal Pell grant, and you can’t be in default on any educational loan.

Grants by State

Virtually all states have their own school grant programs.

It is very easy to find out about them by consulting our exclusive state by state listing of available programs.

Although your eligibility for some of these will be determined after you submit your FAFSA, applying for some of these grants require submitting separate forms. These can be accessed either be from the school in question or from the grant program’s website.

They are then submitted prior to the beginning of the school year.

Grants and Scholarships Given by Private Foundations or Educational Institutions

There are all kinds of foundations that give grants to students based on financial need, often along with good academic performance on the part of the student.

These grants are known as scholarships.

They may have various criteria other than simple financial need and good grades – sometimes they are for, say, underprivileged minority groups, students studying a particular field (for instance, electronic technology), and so on.

Check our listing of state grants and scholarships and you will find many of these available programs.

Scholarships can often be secured from the very school a student is attending. If you have good grades and clear financial need, you may be eligible for one. Simply check with your school’s financial aid department and they can tell you all about scholarship eligibility.

Primary and Secondary School Grants

It should be noted that the above discussion has mainly been about grants for post secondary education – i.e. the college or university level. There are also grants/scholarships available for children attending private school at the secondary (high school) or even primary educational levels.

These grants are a bit harder to find, but nevertheless many programs exist.

Probably the best advice here is to talk to the financial aid administrator of the school to which your child is applying. They can tell you all about both the grant and scholarship opportunities of the school itself, and of various foundations and government programs that you can apply to. You can also check with your state’s department of education.

If you want to go to school, the grant money is, more often than not, there.

If you are truly wealthy enough not to qualify for any grant money, chances are you won’t be searching for grants anyway. So rest assured that if a grant seems like it will be necessary to help you out with education costs, you’ll probably be eligible for one.

It may not cover the entire cost of your tuition, but the more effort you put into finding a series of school grants (rather than just one) the more of your educational costs you can potentially fund.

The first step is apply to go for the main “big” grants – the federal grants listed above, plus whatever is available at the state level.

For that, the key is submitting your FAFSA as early as possible in year you wish to attend school.

After that is done, begin making a big list of all the more private school grant sources available – everything from scholarships from your school, to private foundations, to even websites. When you’re done you should have a large list of potential sources.

Simply apply to them all, and see what happens. If you’re lucky, you’ll find yourself with a good, substantial proportion of your education taken care of. Good luck!
